In order to support an economic recovery while maintaining public health, leaders in La Plata County must work together to start planning for an economic recovery that safeguards our public health.  While we do not know when, businesses will eventually begin to slowly reopen to the public.  Through careful planning and outreach, we can help businesses implement best practices that support their operations and reduce our local infection rate.  As part of the Challenge Studio, Downtown Colorado Inc., will convene public, private, health care, and educational leaders in Southwest Colorado to form a committee tasked with creating and implementing plans to support a strong - and healthy - economic rebound.

During the Challenge Studio, the Business Reopening Committee will consider various scenarios and identify practical actions to lead us towards a better than anticipated recovery.  Following this initial conversation, this committee will continue researching and working with health care and private sector partners on creative ideas to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and plan for a long-term economic recovery.  DCI's Challenge Studio will kick off the first meeting of the Business Reopening Committee next Wednesday, April 15th from 9-11am.

**Durango is  hoping to address the challenge below at IN THE GAME in August, however, in the face of Covid 19, we will make sure this Studio workshop identifies the best and new practices that can help to protect these downtowns and corridors as we face unprecedented new challenges!

The rising costs of land and labor have led to an Increase In housing prices and prevented real estate development in key areas of Durango. In most cases, the private sector alone cannot overcome these challenges and build the supply of housing necessary for the students, workers, seniors, and others who want to live In Durango. That's why the City of Durango has taken steps to form an Urban Renewal Authority In an effort to facilitate affordable housing development. We've also created a comprehensive housing plan to help identify solutions to increasing our housing supply. Public-private partnerships and the use of creative financing tools, most

notably Tax Increment Financing (TIF), can help us Increase our attainable housing options and achieve our community's shared vision for the future. The City of Durango  is seeking technical assistance and networking opportunities offered through the Challenge Studio program to help create and implement URA affordable housing plans.
